More on Blog # 4

I love this song ,
I know most of us already know justto refresh our memories.

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND
words and music
by Woody GuthrieChorus:

This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me
Chorus
As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!
Chorus
In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.
Chorus 2x

Blof # 4 Antonio & Delfino

This " dual existence" between Caucasian and minorities is really awful in my school. It is not only among Hispanics, but it is also among African Americans .My school has a majority of African American. Even though they are born here and go to the same schools, they still have this kind of "dual existence" attitude in them. When they come to school they talk and be in the same classes, but when they have free time, I see all the African American group together, all Caucasian group together, and Hispanics together. This kind of situation is worst when we have morning bus duty. We make all the bus riders sit in the auditorium in the morning. They cannot leave any empty seats in between, they cannot sit on the next row until the previous one is filled up. When the bus comes if there is an African American student already sitting on the seat, a Caucasian refuses to sit next to him/her, and if there is a Caucasian sitting, an African American refuses to sit next to him/her. They just say " I don't want to sit next to white chick or I don't want to sit next to a black.
It is same with Hispanic students also. Some times especially during TCAP testing we give them free time. We take them outside and give them time to just talk and be with each other. When I see around I see different groups of Caucasian, African American , and Hispanics. They all sit in different groups and talk , and for some reason I always remember the proverb " Birds of same feather flock together".
As an immigrant teacher I faced a major problem when I joined my school. Kids are not used to seeing a teacher other than a Caucasian or African American in the schools. When I joined the school it was hard for them to accept me as their teacher. Not only the kids even some adults were equally prejudice. When they saw me after the Christmas break one of them even commented "oh, you are back ".
Because I am an immigrant teacher I always make sure that I say the pledge with the students and also make sure that all my students stand up during the pledge. When I see any student sitting I go to him and explain that if they sit during the pledge is a disrespect to "our" country. I use the word "our" to show that even though I look different I am also one of them. As an educator I think it is my duty to be a good role model. If I take this negative attitude seriously, then I do not have any right to be a teacher . When I divide my students for group activities I always make sure that apart from their proficiency level, I include all the races in a team.
America has a long way to go to erase this issue of racism. When I hear any comments that is racist I call them and explain to them that everyone in America is an immigrant. I ask them if they know the song "This land is my land, this land is your land
from California to New York island...........( that always make them smile, and I tell them that is a positve attitude, and send them back.

Antonio & Delfino- Ch 6 & 7

The worst situation I find is Hector's. Hector was a music teacher and dedicated his whole life to teach music. Even though he dedicated his life teaching music his opera work was not appreciated by the Mexican people. He blamed the Mexican people for not appreciating his work and this made his life bitter. His own bitterness caused him his health and he died in loneliness.

Hector 's life remind me of an old saying " Laugh and the whole world laugh with you, weep you weep alone". It is up to an individual how to handle a situation. if you have a positive attitude there is always a positive outcome. Hector did not have a positive attitude, and it had a negative effect on his life , his health . Eventually, he died in loneliness. In contrast to Hector, accomplishment of Mercedes Quinonez was amazing. At the age of 42 years she started studying music all over again. Her determination was very well rewarded, and she performed for the first time in Tijuana's premier soprano at the age of 51 years.

The immigrant of Atolinga was ambitious and I don't see any harm in going to other countries that have better opportunities. The opportunities do not come knocking at our door . It is up to us to put some effort and find them. That is what people of Atolinga have done. they migrated to the land of opportunities , and made best out of it. If we don't try to succeed in the life , we end up like Hector.Raul Briseno and his family migrated to Chicago, Nebraska, Indiana etc and worked to make their life better. Normally this whole process of migration happens just like Raul Briseno's family. One person in the family leaves his hometown and others follow him. That was the situation of Raul's family. The immigration not only make their life prosperous, but it changes the community and the life of the family members in his hometown. There are other negative aspects of this prosperity. Family members who are in hometown starts spending lavishly and shows off and make other people envious.

As for the talk of going back home, the first generation who migrate to new countries always talk about going back to their home country. It is the kids who are born here are reluctant to go back . The kids get so used to the comfort and luxury here , when they see they would not get those luxuries in their parents' hometown they refuse to go back. That is the case of Chon Salinas.

velvet painting

It was fascinating to read about the velvet painting. It was really interesting to know how the assembly line was created to complete these painting. Painting is suppose to be a talent ,but the way the people in Juarez made use of this art is amazing. Assembly line in car manufacturing was created by Ford Motors( I guess), but this assembly line is really interesting
According to the book, this Velvet painting business had provided living to not just one person , one family ,but to to whole region and also to many people who stated their own retail business. It is impossible for the Americans to understand the other ethnic traditions and culture. There are some people who are prejudice, but some people do understand and respect other cultures. Most American kids take their privileges and opportunities for granted.
These opportunities only force immigrants to cross boarder illegally. I was very depressed when I came to the part where that young women of 29 years died.
I was kind of relieved when Diaz survived and Delfino made it to U.S. I know any illegal act is illegal ,but when Delfino made it to U.S I was really happy.
It is terrible to see the ethnic discrimination, but this problem can be addressed by inviting eminent speaker from other ethnic groups as a guest speaker, or by showing movies etc. I would address this matter by talking about the traditions of other cultures whenever they have any celebrations or any traditonal feast or festivals.
I did not know any thing about velvet painting . when I read this book and also the assignment for this chapters, i was curious to know more about this . I googled to get the info and I found there is a whole museum of velvet painting in Portland , Oregon.

Being an immigrant myself (legal, of course :) , my opinion is different from those who are born here. When true reasons( for their visit ) are given people face many problems to get the visa that makes it harder even to visit America . This is one of the reasons that illegal population has increased.
If people from neighbouring countries get work permit or work visa easily the situation of illegal immigration might be under control. Government officials know that these illegal immigrants are the cheap labors. If they are controlled, things will be different. However, if nation's broken immigration system is reformed it can be under control.
Not everyone has a hard life like Delfino or like Andres, but if the guest worker proposal supported by George W. bush is reformed , people like Delfino would not have any problem to immigrate to America.
